Since the early 1980s, CONSOL Energy has extracted coalbed methane (CBM) from the ground in order to reduce the gas content in its coal seams prior to being mined, enhancing the safety and productivity of its mining operations.  

In 2005, CONSOL established CNX Gas Corporation, a business that has expanded to become one of the largest independent natural gas exploration, development, production and gathering companies in the country.

CNX Gas Corporation holds the CBM rights for 4.5 billion tons of proved coal reserves. In 2007, the business unit drilled 370 development wells producing 58,249 million cubic feet of CBM. Active operations are located in southwestern Virginia, western Kentucky, northern West Virginia and southwestern Pennsylvania. CNX Gas is the second largest gas producer by volume in Appalachia.
