J. Brett Harvey is president and chief executive officer of CONSOL Energy and chief executive officer of CNX Gas. He can speak authoritatively on all aspects of the corporation. He is also a member of CONSOL Energy’s Board of Directors and chairman of the CNX Gas Corporation Board of Directors.
Prior to joining CONSOL, Harvey was president and chief executive officer of PacifiCorp Energy Inc., a subsidiary of PacifiCorp, one of the country’s largest electric utility companies. In addition, he served as vice president of PacifiCorp Fuels Department and president and chief executive officer of Interwest Mining Company.
A fourth-generation coal miner, Harvey began his business career in 1979 with Kaiser Steel Company as a longwall supervisor at the company’s Sunnyside Mine in Utah. He advanced to mining superintendent in 1980 and became general manager of the mine in 1982. Two years later he was elected vice president and general manager, Kaiser Coal of New Mexico.
In 1986, he joined Utah Power & Light Company as a director of technical sales. He was promoted to general manager-mining division a year later, and to vice president-fuels and mining in 1988. Harvey was elected vice president – mining of PacifiCorp in 1990. He was named electric operations vice president in 1992, president and chief executive officer of Interwest in 1993, vice president of PacifiCorp Fuels in 1993, and president and chief executive officer of PacifiCorp Energy in 1995. He became president and chief executive officer of CONSOL on January 1, 1998.
Harvey is a member of the coal industry advisory board of the International Energy Agency, chairman of the Bituminous Coal Operators’ Association Board of Directors, and is a member of the Leadership Council of the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity. In addition, Harvey is a member of the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority, the National Coal Council, Waterways Council, Inc., and The Conservation Fund. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America and a director and past chairman of the Greater Pittsburgh Council of the Boy Scouts. He serves on the board of directors of the Duquesne Club and is a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Chairman’s Council. Harvey also serves on the Allegheny Technologies Incorporated Board of Directors and the Barrick Gold Corporation Board of Directors.
A native of Utah, he holds a bachelor’s degree in mining engineering from the University of Utah. In February 2008, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah Alumni Association. Also in 2008, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Duquesne University. In 2000, he was a recipient of the University of Utah's John E. Wilson Distinguished Alumnus Award.
