CONSOL Energy is among the leading eastern U.S. gas producers
and has transformed itself from a pure-play coalbed methane
producer to a full-fledged exploration and production company. The
company is a leading producer in the Marcellus Shale, has an active
exploration program in the Utica Shale and has proved natural gas
reserves of 4.0 trillion cubic feet.
The rich black Marcellus and Utica shales are considered by
those in the industry as two of the most promising energy
exploration developments in history, with the potential to sustain
our country's energy needs for decades and reduce our dependency on
foreign fuel sources. It is estimated that more than 500 trillion
cubic feet of natural gas is contained in these stretches of rock
that run through parts of Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and West
Virginia.
CONSOL's natural gas operations include coalbed methane
extraction, conventional and shale gas exploration and production,
all of which requires expertise and technology that continues to
evolve and advance. From safety to environmental protocols,
techniques and equipment, advances in these areas are continuous,
improving recovery, enhancing safety, and providing more
environmentally protective methods.
CONSOL Energy has already achieved a leadership position in the
development and exploration of natural gas for multiple reasons.
First, the impressive success we've had in drilling more
than 4,000 coalbed methane wells and 9,000 conventional wells
has positioned us to maximize production in the Marcellus and Utica
acreage for which we currently have the rights. Second, with
state-of-the-art exploration and production techniques, we have
achieved strong operational efficiencies, while at the same time
protecting the environment and the communities we serve. Finally,
because much of our Marcellus acreage is located in areas with
pipeline-grade gas, it can be directed right to the market without
processing.
